South Dundas Cannabis Retail Survey available until January 7th, 2019

The Municipality of South Dundas would like to hear from you regarding the sale of Cannabis at retail stores in South Dundas.

On October 17th, 2018, the federal government legalized the use of Cannabis in Canada. In Ontario, the provincial government is launching a tightly regulated private retail model which goes into effect next April. It will be used to help municipalities work with potential business owners who wish to open a cannabis retail outlet.

The Municipality of South Dundas has posted a survey to seek input from residents about whether Cannabis should be available through local outlets.

The survey takes about 5 minutes to complete. You can find it on the Municipal website, located at www.southdundas.com.

Paper copies of the survey are available at the South Dundas Municipal Centre. Residents of South Dundas may also speak to their Council members to share their thoughts on the proposed regulations.

Your feedback will be used to help inform Council about retail Cannabis.

The survey will be available until January 7th, 2019.

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario began accepting applications for Cannabis-related licenses on Monday, December 17th, 2018.

South Dundas and other Ontario municipalities have until January 22nd, 2019 to decide whether or not they want to be part of the new retail model.

Regulations

The Government of Ontario has released regulations that guide the startup of private Cannabis store. The stand-alone outlets can be open any day of the week between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m., must be at least 150 metres away from schools and bar entry to anyone under 19 years of age.

The government is also expected to release details about the number of licenses allowed in each Ontario community.

The regulations aim to:

  • Keep Cannabis out of the hands of youth

  • Keep profits out of the pockets of criminals

  • Protect public health and safety by allowing adults access to legal Cannabis

For now, Cannabis can only be legally purchased in Ontario online from the Ontario Cannabis Store.
