SDSG local Member of Parliament Guy Lauzon announces he won't be seeking re-election on October 21st

Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry Conservative (SDSDG) Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) Guy Lauzon has announced he will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming federal election in SDSG.

Lauzon made the announcement at the SDSG Conservative Riding Association Annual General Meeting on Saturday, January 26th, 2019.

The AGM took place at the Cornwall Township Lions Club on McPhail Road.

Lauzon is married to his wife Frances. The couple have two grown children.

He was born in St. Andrew's West, Ontario and his family roots in the region have been traced to the 19th century.

In a recorded video released on social media, Lauzon said it had been an honour and a privilege to have served as Member of Parliament of SDSG for the past 15 years. "I have loved each and every day, but it is time to let the next generation of leaders step forward in our community," he said. "Frances and my family have been beside me every step of the way, and I have been blessed with wonderful staff and great, passionate volunteers."

He says he will still be very active to ensure SDSG elects a Conservative Member of Parliament in the next federal election and Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer as the next Prime Minister of Canada.

SDSG Conservative Association President Adrian Bugelli says the procedure to replace Lauzon as the Conservative candidate already started this morning.

"We started to put together a candidate nomination committee. That's an internal one comprised of members of our board along with members of the national party as well," Bugelli told Cornwall Newswatch.

Former parliamentary Assistant to Guy Lauzon and former mayor of North Dundas Eric Duncan says he is considering entering the nomination race.

The outgoing MP, who declined to endorse any potential successor to Nation Valley News, pointed to his time as Caucus Chair for the Stephen Harper Conservative government as one of the highlights of his time in elected office.

Lauzon has been the Conservative Member of Parliament in SDSG for nearly 15 years after defeating Liberal MP Bob Kilger by 3,899 votes in 2004. In 2000, Kilger had defeated Lauzon by 2,962 votes, winning a fourth term as MP. At the time, Lauzon was a member of the Canadian Alliance Party.

He will serve out the remainder of his term until the next federal election on Monday, October 21st, 2019.

Guy Lauzon's constituency office is located at 621 Pitt Street in Cornwall. The office is open Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and can be reached by phone by calling 613-937-3331 or toll-free 1-888-805-2513. You may also e-mail guy.lauzon@parl.gc.ca.

A satellite office is open in Morrisburg on the 3rd floor of the South Dundas Municipal Centre Mondays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

In 2004, a small part of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell was added in the northeast and the name of the riding was changed.
