SD&G OPP are doing random RIDE checks to crack down on people driving high this weekend

SD&G OPP are wasting no time when it comes to cracking down on impaired drivers since Cannabis became legal on October 22nd, 2018. This weekend, OPP have been holding RIDE programs to check random drivers for impairment by Cannabis and Alcohol.

OPP officers were observed conducting RIDE programs on County Road 31 at Highway 401 around 10:11 p.m. on Friday, November 2nd and County Road 31 at Williamsburg around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, November 3rd.

Police are simply asking drivers if they have consumed marijuana that day.

OPP say they have officers trained as Drug Recognition Experts (DRE), who can recognize impairment in drivers under the influence of drugs, alcohol or both.

In a Tuesday, October 16th interview with CBC News, OPP Highway Safety Division Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the Ontario Provincial Police was going to buy new federally approved roadside drug-sceening equipment to identify impaired drivers, but he couldn't say how many, or when the devices would be purchased.

The Ontario Provincial Police Festive Ride Programs usually begin late November.
