On November 11th, 2015, the city of Montreal began dumping untreated sewage into the St. Lawrence river, while the city was conducting repairs on its sewer system.
Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre admitted the dump was "unpopular", but maintained it was done "in a responsible manner".
Montreal said if sewage wasn't dumped into the St. Lawrence River, the city treatment plant could have been damaged, and even more waste could have went into the river.

Three months after Montreal dumped billions of litres of untreated sewage into the St. Lawrence River, studies showed the impact on the environment was minimal.
In February of 2018, Quebec City dumped 46 million litres of raw sewage into the St. Lawrence River over a 12 hour period, in order to complete scheduled maintenance on a pumping station.
Starting November 15th, 2018, the city of Longueuil, Quebec will be dumping up to 160-million litres of raw sewage into the St. Lawrence River.
