Did you know Iroquois, Ontario is home to an award-winning roundabout?
On Saturday, April 21st, 2018, Robinson Consultants Inc. was announced as the winner of the Award of Excellence from the Consulting Engineers of Ontario (CEO) for the design of the Iroquois roundabout. This prestigious award is annually presented to the most outstanding project designed by a consulting engineering firm with less than 50 employees.
"The County is very proud to own and operate this roundabout. Put simply, this award demonstrates that SD&G's roundabout in Iroquois is one of the best in Ontario."—Benjamin de Haan, Director of Transportation and Planning, SD&G
Located at the intersection of County Road 2 and County Road 1/Carman Road, the Iroquois roundabout was the first roundabout designed and constructed within SD&G. The design of the roundabout proved to be particularly challenging due to the alignment of roads, grade changes, utility conflicts, and high volumes of commercial truck traffic.
By including features such as a unique landscaping plan, external truck aprons, widened entry lanes, and high-efficiency lighting, Robinson Consultants ultimately created an attractive, functional, efficient, and safe way to travel through this intersection.
"Our team worked hard to deliver an award-winning design. Robinson appreciates being recognized for the effort."—Robert Cotnam, P.Eng, Project Manager, Robinson Consultants Inc.
The Iroquois roundabout was constructed by Willis Kerr Contracting in 2017, at a cost of $1.2 million dollars. There have been no motor vehicle collisions reported since the new intersection opened to traffic.
"Although there was some concern at the outset of the project, the residents of South Dundas are quite pleased with the finished product. The roundabout is an attractive gateway feature into our community. Robinson Consultants is well deserving of the Award of Excellence".—Evonne Delegarde, Mayor, South Dundas and Acting Warden, United Counties of SD&G.
The Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway team in partnership with the Ontario Provincial Police and MediaPlex students at St. Clair College created this roundabout public service announcement to guide viewers through the safe and proper navigation of roundabouts.
