"Familiar Fraud" occurs when a friend, or family member uses a close relationship for their own financial gain.
Identity theft is a broad term that encompasses several different types of criminal activity, some which have a greater impact on the victim's life than others. The most common from financial fraud is, where your personal information is used without your knowledge or consent to establish a new account, typically a loan or credit card.
The Grenville County OPP Crime Unit investigated a similar case of fraud, where the female accused had befriended a 41-year-old male from the Ottawa area. The accused then stole the victim's identity and used this personal information for fraudulent means, resulting in an approximately $20,000 loss for the victim.
On February 26th, 2019, 35-year-old Katrina Gilmour of Brockville is charged with:

The accused was released on a Promise to Appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brockville on April 12th, 2019.
