Traffic delays possible—OPP Advises motorists to be aware of potential traffic delays today

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is warning area motorists to be aware of potential traffic delays during their travels today.

Protest activities, specifically a solidarity slowdown, may delay or interrupt the normal flow of traffic on Highway 401 westbound, currently in the Prescott area.

As of 11:15 a.m., OPP advise protest activities have been moved off Highway 401 westbound, west of Deseronto.

The OPP's objective is to maintain the safe flow of traffic and, when delays occur, restore traffic flow in the safest manner possible. The OPP is also working with those who may organize protest events to provide a safe and peaceful opportunity to exercise their lawful rights while minimizing the impact on the traveling public, where possible.

Motorists should check in advance for road advisory information and monitor local media for the latest updates. The OPP appreciates everyone's cooperation and patience during these occurrences.

CBC News reported on Twitter that an Akwesasne activist organized the slowdown in support of the Wet’suwet’en of British Columbia whose hereditary chiefs ended a standoff with the RCMP this week as they fight the construction of a pipeline on their traditional territory.

“Our main goals are public safety and asking motorists to be patient and aware,” Sgt. Cynthia Savard tells the Ottawa Citizen, adding that the OPP was trying to make contact with the protestors.
